Watching Sumo Morning Practice in Tokyo

How to watch a sumo stable's morning practice in Tokyo: the two guided visits, the rules (quiet, no flash, sitting on the floor), and how it differs from a show.

Updated October 2026

To watch a sumo stable’s morning practice in Tokyo, go with a guide: the most reviewed visit is Japan Shine Tour’s, about three hours with a national newspaper sumo journalist and an interpreter, rated 4.9 from 308 and from US$94 a person in current promotion (usually US$101) (checked October 2026). Practice is serious training, not a show: you watch from the side, often sitting on the floor, quietly and without flash. Both guided visits had their next dates from 30 November 2026 when we checked.

Practice or a show?

A show is built for an audience: an MC, demonstration bouts, a ring challenge and photos. Morning practice is the wrestlers’ working day. You see the drills and the bouts of training at full effort, at close range, and you see the discipline and the strict traditions of a stable. Nobody performs for you, and nobody explains in English unless your guide does. The shows themselves make the point: the Asakusa and sukiyaki dinner shows describe themselves as different from a serious morning practice tour. If you want both, do the practice in the morning and a show another day.

The two guided visits

Japan Shine Tour, with a sumo journalist. The practice visit with a journalist is about three hours: an introduction to sumo’s history and rituals from a sumo specialist who writes for a national newspaper, with an interpreter, then the practice, viewed by special permission, commemorative photos, and time for questions. Wear comfortable clothes, because you sit on the floor; flash photography is not allowed. The viewing area is traditional and is not suitable for wheelchair users or babies under one. Meals and transport are not included.

Air Choice, with an English guide. The "Watch sumo!" visit, from US$95 a person and rated 4.7 from 453, is about two hours: a guide meets you and takes you to watch a stable’s practice, with a commemorative photo. You may take photos as long as they do not get in the way of the practice, and children may come if they can watch quietly, at the adult price.

The rules that matter

  • Quiet. A practice is not a performance: you watch quietly, and children may come only if they can watch quietly too.
  • No flash. Photos are allowed at both visits as long as they do not disturb the practice; flash is not.
  • The floor. At the journalist-led visit you sit on the floor for the session; wear clothes you can sit in.
  • Dates. Both visits’ next dates were from 30 November 2026, after the November tournament in Fukuoka (8 to 22 November 2026). The next Tokyo tournament runs from 10 to 24 January 2027.
