Sumo in Tokyo with Children
The Tokyo sumo shows that suit children: the family workshop in Ryogoku, the Asakusa dinner show, a neighbourhood show in Koto, ages, infants and lunch (Oct 2026).
With children, book the family sumo workshop in Ryogoku: two hours in which former professional wrestlers teach the whole family the basic drills, fight an exhibition match and let you challenge them in a padded suit, followed by a mini chanko hot pot lunch, rated 4.9 from 459 and from US$96 a person in current promotion (usually US$120) (checked October 2026). If the children would rather watch than wrestle, the Asakusa dinner show is designed for families too.

The family workshop in Ryogoku
The family workshop is run by Alva Japan Tours in Ryogoku, the sumo district, with commentary in English and Japanese. The first hour is the ring: former professional wrestlers demonstrate, then teach shiko (the leg stomp), teppo (palm thrusts) and suri-ashi (the sliding step) to everyone who wants to try; anyone can stay seated and film instead. After a full-speed exhibition match, guests can challenge a wrestler in a padded suit. Lunch is a mini chanko hot pot, with vegetarian, vegan, halal-style and allergy options if you ask 48 hours ahead (the kitchen is not halal-certified; it can leave out pork and alcohol).
What to know: loose sportswear works best, and shoes come off on the ring. Children aged six and older pay the adult rate. You wait in front of the venue until 10am. The workshop runs only when enough people book; if it is cancelled for that reason, you get a full refund.

Watching rather than wrestling: Asakusa
The Asakusa Sumo Club's show is a fun, family-friendly entertainment show for adults and children, two hours around a ring with all-you-can-eat hot pot, a geisha dance and live sumo with bilingual commentary. A few guests can challenge a wrestler, by lottery. It is not suitable for babies under one, and infants do not get a meal, seat or souvenir. The Asakusa show’s page.
A neighbourhood show in Koto
The Sunamachi sumo show, from US$59 a person in current promotion (usually US$70) and rated 5.0 from 99, is held on a local shopping street in Koto ward with 140 shops, away from the tourist districts. Children aged four and up can join in, under-fours are free, and women and children may step onto the ring. Former professionals give a demonstration and real bouts, an English-speaking host explains, and you buy food along the shopping street before the show. It is about 15 minutes’ walk from Minami-Sunamachi station on the Tozai line; arrive 30 to 45 minutes early.
The short shows with young children
At the Shibuya Sumo Show and the Kabukicho show, infants sit on a parent’s lap. At the Ginza show the hands-on Interactive option is not suitable for children under five, and children must be with a guardian. At SUMOLAND in Ryogoku a child cannot sit on a lap in the standard seats, so book a seat for every child; the box seats allow it.
